Bat Walk in Beberbeķi

In early September, an evening walk will take place in the nature park "Beberbeķi", during which everyone interested will be able to get to know one of our most mysterious neighbors - bats. The walk will be led by certified bat expert Klinta Valija Kupče, and during it, with a special device, it will be possible to listen to the ultrasonic signals of bats, which are inaudible to the human ear.

In our daily lives, we tend to overlook the diversity of life around us. One of the most mysterious neighbors is the dark-loving bat, which waits for sunset to leave its hiding place and go hunting for insects. During the walk, participants will observe the bats living in Beberbeķi, learn how to recognize them, and get answers to all their questions about bats.

“Bats are a little-studied, but important group of animals in the ecosystem. They naturally regulate insect populations. The old trees and lake in Beberbeķi Nature Park provide a suitable living environment for them. At the event, we will hear their ultrasonic calls with a bat detector and get to know the world of this nocturnal animal in a completely different way,” says Klinta Valija Kupče, bat expert at the environmental company Ecosoul.

The walk will take place on September 9 or 10, 2026 – the exact date will be announced a few days in advance, choosing the most suitable weather conditions for bat observations. Starts at 18:30, duration – approximately two hours. The meeting point will be indicated in the application confirmation.

The bat walk is organized as part of the development of the nature protection plan for the nature park “Beberbeķi”. The plan is being developed by the environmental solutions company Ecosoul on behalf of the Mārupe municipality . During the development of the plan, the natural values of the territory are identified, including bat species and their habitats, and public involvement is one of the most important parts of the development of the plan.

We encourage you to dress appropriately for the weather, choose comfortable, closed shoes and bring a flashlight.

The event is taking place within the framework of the project “Development of the Nature Protection Plan for the Nature Park “Beberbeķi”” (No. 2.2.3.3/2/24/A/008), which is implemented by the Mārupe Municipality. The project is co-financed by the European Union under the specific support objective 2.2.3. “Improve nature protection and biodiversity, “green” infrastructure, especially in urban areas, and reduce pollution” of the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, within the framework of the measure 2.2.3.3. “Measures to promote and preserve biodiversity”.
